‘Permanenten’, the premises of The West Norway Museum of Decorative Art, is not a beauty parlour.
The name is an abridgment of ‘The Permanent Exhibition Building’. Built by the architect Henry Bucher and completed in 1886, it was intended to be Bergen’s cultural palace.
Initially the building housed the Trade and Industry Association, Vestlandske Kunstindustrimuseum, Bergen Picture Gallery, Bergen Art Association and the Norwegian Fisheries Museum. Now The West Norway Museum of Decorative Art enjoys the use of the entire building.
